Rangers Look to 2015 With Ogando, Tomas

Even with the Rangers sprinting toward the finish line with nine wins in their last 10 games, 2014 is a race they long ago lost.

Which means, of course, that 2015 can’t get here fast enough.

The Rangers are already eyeing next season with a couple of moves, putting pitcher Alexi Ogando on the “extreme fatigue” list and holding a private workout for Cuban defector Yasmani Tomas.

Ogando’s season ended back on June 4 because of elbow inflammation, and with the Rangers’ latest designation he won’t be able to pitch in winter ball in the Dominican Republic until December at the earliest.

Also in the Domincan, the Rangers want a closer look at Tomas, a 23-year-old outfielder. They watched him a group workout over the weekend and will have go through a private workout today.

Tomas, who should become a free agent before next season, went 6 for 16 with two home runs for Cuba during the 2013 World Baseball Classic.

The Rangers went through a similar due diligence process before signing Cuban defector Leonys Martin in 2011.
