Rangers' Young Arms Getting Rude Welcome to Majors

Remember when the Rangers had the deepest, most talented farm system in baseball just brimming with live arms bursting to pitch in the majors?

Yeah, me neither. Seems like a lifetime ago.

With the projected starting rotation long in tatters, the Rangers have been forced to dip into the minors for rushed, ragged debuts.

The reviews this week are terrifying.

On Monday night Miles Mikolas – making his second start – surrendered 12 hits and a 6-run inning to the hapless Houston Astros over 3.1 innings. And last night Phil Irwin’s first start wasn’t much better, as he allowed the first six Astros to reach base in a 33-pitch 1st inning.

Irwin, called up from Triple-A Round Rock earlier in the day, kept the Rangers in the game trailing only 3-2 when he left after four innings. But he ultimately took the loss, giving the Rangers consecutive horrendous starts.

The last two nights in Arlington the Astros have battered the Rangers’ newbies for a combined 20 runs and 29 hits. And don’t look now but the Rangers are only 3-6 against an Astros team that they beat up on to the tune of 17-2 last season.
