Rangers' Search For Lefty Depth Lands Veteran From Angels

The search for the finishing touches on the roster took the Rangers to the pitching mound Tuesday, where they added veteran left-handed Cesar Ramos.

Ramos, 31, was released by the Angels after making 65 relief appearances last season. The Rangers will likely give him a chance to be a starter, or more likely a long relief role out of the bullpen. He’s made only 10 starts during his Major League career, most recently with the Rays in 2014.

With the addition of Ramos, the Rangers will head to Spring Training next month with Jake Diekman, Sam Freeman, Alex Claudio and Andrew Faulkner sorting out the lefty roles on the staff.

Ramos has never dominated hitters at the Major League level, and it seems irrationally optimistic to think he can win a starting job on the Rangers’ talented staff. But he has a shot as a long reliever to eat up innings in blowouts, similar to the role he filled with Anaheim last season.

A native Texan who was born in Duncanville and graduated from UT-Arlington, Richie Whitt has been a mainstay in the Metroplex media since 1986.
