Rangers Pitcher Jeffress Arrested, Charged With DWI: Jail Records

Jeffress was suspended for 100 games in 2009 after failing a drug test for the third time

Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels placed Jeremy Jeffress on the restricted list Friday, saying the pitcher was unable to perform after spending the night in jail after being arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.

The 28-year-old was booked into the jail at 5:13 a.m. His bond was set at $500.

Texas Rangers pitcher Jeremy Jeffress is booked into the Dallas County Jail on a charge of driving while intoxicated Friday morning, according to online records.

The Rangers released a statement earlier in the day saying they are "aware of the situation involving Jeremy Jeffress that took place early this morning" and are "in the process of the gathering information."

Friday afternoon, Daniels sat before the media and discussed what he knew about the incident, but admitted there was still much to get their hands around.

Daniels said Jeffress' being put on the restrictive list was because he didn't sleep and would physically be unable to perform Friday night. He added that it was not a suspension related to an allegation of drug use or the arrest, and said that Jeffress would likely be back on the active roster Saturday.

Jeffress was suspended for 50 games in 2007 after testing positive for drugs — reportedly for marijuana — after being given a warning for his first offense. He was suspended for 100 games in 2009 for a third failed test.

If Jeffress fails another drug test, he faces a lifetime ban. Daniels said Friday afternoon he wasn't sure if alcohol was on the list of drugs considered by Major League Baseball.

Jeffress and catcher Jonathan Lucroy were traded from the Milwaukee Brewers to the Rangers before the Aug. 1 non-waiver trade deadline. He last pitched for the Rangers on Tuesday where he gave up one hit and one run in one inning of work in a 3-0 loss to the Cincinnati Reds.
