Rangers Get Permission to Talk to Davis

Dave Magadan drew some criticism during his last two years as hitting coach for the Texas Rangers, and while he's still under contract, he has taken the Rangers' advice and been on the lookout for other jobs while the club searched for a manager, a search that officially ended Friday when they introduced Jeff Banister as the 18th manager in team history.

Before Banister's hire was made official, the Rangers were granted permission to speak with Oakland A's hitting coach Chili Davis as a possible replacement for Magadan.

Davis has also garnered interest from the New York Yankees, who have also reportedly been courting Magadan, along with the New York Mets. Davis had a long career as an accomplished hitter and helped lead an A's offense that scored the third-most runs in the American League in each of the past two seasons.

In 19 big-league seasons, Davis hit .274 with 350 home runs and was a three-time all-star while playing for the Giants, Angels, Twins, Royals and Yankees.
