Rangers Catchers Still Going At Ridiculous Clip

When Robinson Chirinos began the year as the Rangers' starting catcher, there were some questions as to just how effective he could be as the unquestioned starter, especially with the Rangers tied to off-season talks for All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy of the Brewers.

When Chirinos was hit by a pitch and fractured his forearm in the season's first week, there was a chaotic feeling of doom surrounding whatever would happen with the position.

Turns out, Chirinos hasn't been missed at all, and it's no knock on him.

Bryan Holaday, who was acquired for Bobby Wilson after spring training from Detroit, and Wilson — yeah, the same Bobby Wilson, who was re-acquired — have been fantastic in Chirinos' absence of going on two months now.

The Rangers lead the American League in offensive production from the catcher spot, as that trio has combined to hit .274 with an OPS of .811 — both league-leading stats.

Who's been the big catalyst? You guessed it, the bounced back-and-forth Wilson, who is hitting .348 with an .888 OPS in his 46 at-bats since rejoining the club.

"I'm trying to be hitter-ish, attack pitches and not worry about the results," Wilson told The Dallas Morning News. "The biggest key for me is being aggressive."

Being hitter-ish is working for Wilson, and with Chirinos due to return in the next couple of weeks, it seems he's all but assured himself a spot on the roster ahead of Holaday when the team is back to full strength.
