Quiet Consistency For Moreland

The Rangers may be reeling and runs have been hard to come by, but it seems like whenever the Rangers do cross the plate, Mitch Moreland is somehow involved.

Moreland is one of the few in the line-up nowadays that has been consistent.

His numbers at the plate are good; .297 batting average, five home runs and 12 RBI’s. In Monday’s 7-2 loss to the A’s, Moreland’s solo homer was one of the two runs the Rangers scored. He also matched a career high with three hits and scored two runs in a 7-5 win over the New York Yankees on Saturday night. American League pitchers are finding out that Moreland is not an easy out. Whether it is via base hit or walk, he finds a way to get on base.

Being versatile also helps keep Moreland in the line-up and on the field. Right now, he will be the primary right-fielder while Nelson Cruz is on the disabled list. Before then, he was back and forth, in right or at first base.

Moreland is accustomed to playing on the big stage, jumping to the major leagues right in the middle of a pennant race last season. He displayed poise as a fresh rookie, hitting nine homers and knocking in 25 RBI’s in 47 games. His play earned him a spot on the postseason roster, where he became the first Rangers player in the 2010 World Series to hit a home run. He contributed a 3-run shot in Game 3 of the Fall Classic.

The experience last season has helped Moreland prepare for this season. His poise at the plate and on the field shows he feels he belongs in the show, and is not just a flash in the pan. At this rate, you could be looking at an All-Star in the making.
