Remember the Brandon Webb experiment a couple of years ago when the Rangers took a chance on a former Cy Young winner who was coming off arm surgery and had missed the entire season prior. Well, that one didn't work out for the Rangers, but it was very low risk and it was a no harm, no foul situation.
Now, the Rangers have a chance to get another reclamation project and see if it can work out for them like Joe Nathan did. Madson didn't pitch at all in 2012 after undergoing arm surgery, and now he's looking to get back at 32 years old, which is still a relatively young pitcher.
Madson would be a huge piece to add to the Rangers' bullpen should he bounce back from his season off and could give them alternatives if Mike Adams and/or Koji Uehara don't return, and it would likely come for a fairly cheap price and more importantly just a one-year deal, probably somewhere in the neighborhood of $6-8 million.
