Potential Target: Jake Peavy

In an ongoing series, we'll take a look at possible free-agent and trade targets for the Texas Rangers this winter.

Target: Jake Peavy, RHP

2014 stats: 7-13, 3.73 ERA, 158 strikeouts, 63 walks, 202 2/3 innings

Peavy is another classic case of a guy with much different splits in the American League and National League after a midseason trade. Most of the time recently, it's been guys going from the NL to the AL and then stumbling, see Jason Hammel, Ryan Dempster, etc. In Peavy's case, he went from being a pretty awful American League pitcher to the San Francisco Giants as a rental player and did really well in his new National League home.

His ERA with Boston was approaching 5.00 and he was 1-9 before a deal sent him to the Giants and he proceeded to go 6-4 with 2.17 ERA. He's still relatively young at 33 years old and has been solid but hasn't had a really good season since 2012 with the White Sox.

Peavy could be a nice, relatively cheap piece to fill out the middle of a rotation for the Rangers, but it'd seem he'd be more likely to want to stick around the National League after his success with the Giants and earlier in his career with the San Diego Padres.
