In an ongoing series, we'll take a look at possible free-agent and trade targets for the Texas Rangers this winter.
Target: Alex Avila, C
2014 stats:.218 batting average, .327 on-base percentage, 22 doubles, 11 home runs, 47 RBIs, .995 fielding percentage, 34 percent caught-stealing rate
Avila could still be under contract with the Tigers, making this a moot point, but it's unlikely they'll pick up their club option on the veteran catcher for in excess of $5 million with only a $200,000 buyout if they decide to opt out.
The Rangers could bring in Avila to be a timeshare guy with Robinson Chirinos, and his history suggests he could see an offensive resurgence to a point and possibly win the job outright, and you can do a whole lot worse than Chirinos as a No. 2 catcher.
