Colby Lewis was said to be behind schedule after undergoing knee surgery following the 2015 season and not throwing all winter.
The veteran workhorse has grown accustomed to offseason surgeries, but even still, it was suggested he'd be behind schedule from the rest of the Rangers' starting pitchers as he's set to enter the year as the Rangers No. 4 starter before eventually sliding back to No. 5, assuming Martin Perez is able to stay above him in the pecking order, when Yu Darvish is ready to roll.
With all that said, Lewis turned in a pretty nice day at the office in Wednesday's Cactus League opener against the defending world champion Royals, and that was really encouraging to see.
Lewis' location was crisp, and even though he loaded the bases in the first inning, he was able to get out of it without any damage. Then, he came back out and worked a perfect second inning to put a cap on his first spring start.
If Lewis was indeed behind schedule, he clearly isn't anymore, and that's a pretty pleasant surprise for the Rangers moving forward.
