Holland Struggles in Second Rehab Start

Derek Holland was pretty strong in his rehab debut last week at Double-A Frisco, but in his second time out on Monday with Triple-A Round Rock, Holland didn't meet his expectations.

His plan was to throw three innings or 50 pitches, but made it through only one inning, walking one and allowing four hits, including a three-run home run and a solo shot to back-to-back batters. He threw 42 pitches to get through the one inning.

Holland's velocity was good, touching the mid-90s with his his fastball, and he mixed in some good off-speed pitches, as well. He said he was disappointed with his fastball command at times, as both of the homers came off fastballs. But he did say he was pleased overall with his pitch arsenal and the way he felt, adding that this is basically spring training for him since he was on the shelf from January until last week.

“I was happy with the overall outing but displeased at the location of my fastball at the times I needed it to be good — like both the pitches they hit out of the park,” Holland told the Austin American-Statesman. “I can’t be too results-oriented right now. This is just the second time I’ve been in game situations since the injury so this is like spring training for me.”

Holland hopes to rejoin the Rangers by the end of August, when the minor-league season comes to an end.
