The Texas Rangers signing of all-star shortstop Ian Desmond, on the heels of three straight declining seasons, to play left field every day for them tells you all you need to know about the Rangers' feelings on the oft-injured Josh Hamilton.
On Thursday, Hamilton was cleared to ditch his crutches he'd had for 10 days after receiving a platelet-rich injection into his aching knee, which, I guess, is a good sign.
That means Hamilton can hopefully start a throwing program at some point next week after having done basically nothing before complaining of his sore knee a week before camp even started. As for swinging a bat and actually doing strenuous things? Well, that's another story.
The Rangers clearly don't expect much at all from Hamilton this season, and you really shouldn't either. We'll know soon enough if he's going to get on track to be ready by May, as projected. Time will tell.
