Cole Hamels putting in work too!

Cole Hamels doesn't really need spring training competition.

A pitcher like Hamels, a seasoned vet who's one of the best pitchers in the game, just needs to fine-tune things in the spring and get a few competitive innings in before the season begins. As for his action on Thursday morning in a B game, featuring mostly minor leaguers, that can hardly be considered competitive.

Hamels was very good, as expected. He threw 44 pitches, 31 of which were strikes, and worked three innings while allowing two runs on two hits. Most importantly, he got a good feel for his pitches against a free-swinging lineup of Padres minor leaguers.

"I enjoy being able to go go against guys who are really coming out swinging the bat," Hamels told The Dallas Morning News. "It gives you a lot better perspective of what you have to do. When you have guys who are really aggressive, you have to throw your pitches with conviction."
