Despite the fact Shawn Tolleson worked his second straight scoreless ninth inning and picked up his first big-league save on Wednesday night in Boston, Rangers manager Jeff Banister is still sticking with this whole "no-roles" approach to assembling his bullpen.
Other than Tolleson, who seems to be the closer at this point, he might be right. For goodness sake, Ross Ohlendorf was the Rangers' setup man on Wednesday, working a scoreless eighth inning while allowing just one hit.
And so far, Banister said, the Rangers' relievers are taking the new setup nicely after Wednesday's game marked the second straight of significant bullpen work without allowing a run.
“It is probably challenging for them right now,” Banister told reporters Wednesday night. “But I think it’s one they are starting to embrace. They are putting up zeroes, and that’s what we challenged them to do.”
Whether this is a stroke of genius by Banister or simply a last-ditch effort due to his lack of quality arms, it's worked for a couple of games, and now we'll just have to see how long it can continue.
