AL West Watch: Simmons Could Miss Season

Andrelton Simmons was supposed to be a big get for the Los Angeles Angels this past winter as one of the best young shortstops in the game known for his superb defense.

Now, the Angels will be without their big acquisition for an extended period of time, most likely the rest of the season. All of that, just a week after the Angels lost ace Garrett Richards for the season with Tommy John surgery.

Simmons suffered a torn ligament in his thumb while diving for a stop in the field over the weekend and will need surgery to repair the ligament. The team told reporters they'd provide an update on Simmons' status after the surgery, but it's hard to imagine he's not going to miss the season.

Simmons was batting .219 with a home run and eight RBIs before the injury, but did most of his contribution in the field.
