AL West Watch: Angels' Richards Set for Tommy John

Angels ace out for year with elbow tear

To be fair, the Los Angeles Angels weren't going to challenge anyone for the AL West title this year like they did a year ago.

True, their bullpen was retooled a bit, but their rotation was a one-trick pony and their lineup is awful with the exception of three guys, including the best player in baseball.

Either way, they weren't players to contend this year and truthfully they'd be fortunate to finish third in the West.

Now, that prognosis is even worse.

Ace Garrett Richards will undergo Tommy John surgery, according to a Friday report from Yahoo! Sports after he was already scratched from his last start with "fatigue."

Richards was 1-3 this year with a 2.34 ERA — more than a full run lower than any of his rotation mates — in his six starts. Richards suffered a late season-ending knee injury in 2014 that made his 2015 a question mark, but he responded by going 15-12 with a 3.65 ERA.
