Glee Plots Madonna Sequel After Ratings Triumph

It’s hard to overstate the success of Madonna Night for Fox’s musical comedy “Glee.” The album of Madonna covers from the show rocketed to the top of the iTunes chart this week. And the episode itself garnered 13.1 million viewers, No. 1 in the coveted 18-to-49 age group. The show’s ratings have doubled since returning from hiatus. The videos from the show have gone viral all over the place. EVERYONE LOVES GLEE AND THE SONGS FROM THE SHOW COULD POTENTIALLY SOLVE THE EUROPEAN VOLCANO AIR CRISIS.

Anyway, after pulling off such a smashing stunt, it was a given that the show would go back to the Madonna well. And now, Michael Ausiello of Entertainment Weekly confirms the redux:

…already series creator Ryan Murphy is talking to the Material Girl about a sequel!

Murphy confirms that he’s in discussions with M’s camp and that “Madonna and her people are into it and want it to happen.” The follow-up would air early next season and feature six more songs from the pop icon’s immense catalog of hits. (There’s talk that fans might be able to vote on which tracks should be used via a poll on Fox.com.)

Ooh! Do “Cherish”! I love that song. GIVE ME FAITH. GIVE ME JOY, MY BOY, I WILL ALWAYS CHERISH YOU!! Wait, did I say that out loud?

Anyway, this Madonna theme could easily become an annual event over at “Glee.” And the success of the Madonna episode means there will be plenty more single-artist theme nights. U2. Britney Spears. The Stones. Bruce. They’ll all come calling, because there’s money to be made and a new audience to pull in.

Big picture-wise, you can begin to feel the music industry shifting away from “American Idol” and over to “Glee.” While the comedy may never surpass “Idol” in the ratings, it’s clear that “Glee” is just as effective (if not more so) as a music-selling vehicle. Two of the Madonna soundtrack songs are in the iTunes Top 20. That won’t be the last time “Glee” occupies multiple entries on the chart, and the actors and guest stars from the show are bound to become household names on their own. Madonna was just the tip of the iceberg, gang. Your world is about to get a whole lot more gleeful.
