French Beauty Signs on as Mermaid for “Pirates”

One of France's hottest exports has signed on to star alongside Johnny Depp in "Pirates of the Carribbean: On Stranger Tides."

Astrid Berges-Frisbey will do her best to make us forget about the loss of Keira Knightley, who will not be returning to the fourth in the series for producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

Berges Frisbey will star in the "key role of Syrena, a beautiful and alluring young mermaid," according to a Disney release. Rob Marshall will direct the film which begins shooting in the summer and is due out in May 2011.

Born in Barcelona of French-American and Catalan parentage, and now based in Paris, Bergès-Frisbey is one of France’s brightest young stars. She should have a lot to talk about with the France-residing Depp.

Neither Knightley nor series star Orlando Bloom will return to the new production.

Also filling those gaps are Penelope Cruz, who'll play the daughter of Ian McShane's Blackbeard, and Geoffrey Rush, who Bruckheimer confirmed would return as Barbossa.

There's a lot at stake in this pictures. The first three films in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series amassed a total international box office of $2.7 billion.
