PBCS: “This Means War” Fails to Put Up a Fight

You know, we at PopcornBiz spend a lot of time mocking the career choices of actresses like Katherine Heigl, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Aniston, and the like. These are actresses who seem to make NOTHING but terrible films. In fact, they seem to go out of their way to make the same terrible movie over and over again.

Which brings us to Reese Witherspoon. Have you seen the movies this woman has made lately? Chances are, you probably haven't. Take a look at this week's box office chart and you'll see that her latest - "This Means War" - got bum-rushed (chart via Box Office Mojo, totals don't include Monday).

1. Safe House - $23.8M
2. The Vow - $23.1M
3. Ghost Rider 2 - $22.1M
4. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island - $19.9M
5. This Means War - $17.3M
6. Star Wars Episode I (3D) - $8.0M 7. Chronicle - $7.6M
8. The Woman In Black - $6.7M
9. The Secret World Of Arrietty - $6.4M
10. The Grey - $3.1M

Even "Ghost Rider 2" kicked Reese's tushie. GHOST RIDER 2! I didn't even know that was supposed to open this week! It's been a shockingly robust February at the box office, and yet Reese failed to capitalize. She doesn't even show up in our PBCS standings this week. BEHOLD!

1. The Artist - 539
2. The Descendants - 353
3. Chronicle - 334
4. The Woman In Black - 155
5. The Vow - 148
6. Safe House - 120
7. The Secret World Of Arreitty - 89
8. Journey 2 - 49
9. The Grey - 36
10. The Iron Lady - 34

"This Means War" notched a pathetic score of 12 in our standings, not good enough to crack the top 10. Since "Walk the Line" in 2005, Witherspoon has starred in a string of poorly received movies including "Just Like Heaven," "Rendition," "Four Christmases," and the now-infamous "How Do You Know?" This makes very little sense, given that Witherspoon is a much more likable actress (and human being) than someone like Katherine Heigl. I would like her to STOP starring in terrible romantic comedies and get back to playing scrappy overachievers. Surely, she'd be a great fit for "The Jeremy Lin Story," minus the whole "Jeremy Lin is not a caucasian woman" factor.
