New “Blade Runner” Film Testing Our Reboot/Remake Tolerance

When folks--even our esteemed colleagues--freak out over remakes, reboots and sequels, we usually just roll our eyes and wait for the storm to pass. But word that another "Blade Runner" is on the way has us a wee bit dismayed.

Ridley Scott is so pleased with "Prometheus," his 3D follow up to "Alien" starring Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Patrick Wilson, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce and Noomi Rapace, that he's ready to produce and direct a follow-up to "Blade Runner," reported Deadline. We hate this idea.

At the risk of sounding like a hypocrite--"Blade Runner" is different than your average remake candidate. It wasn't a big hit, finishing 27th at the box office in 1982, it didn't spawn a classic soundtrack or launch a career, or get overlooked because it was made by a bunch of nobodies, and--most importantly--it holds up. The 2007 re-release proved it to be as gorgeous and exciting as ever--you're not gonna make this better with 3D.

But it's gonna happen no matter how sad it makes us, so let the casting rumors begin! It's not yet known if this will be a sequel or prequel or what, but we'll start with replacing the original line-up: Fassbender, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hardy and Matt Damon for the role of Deckard; Marion Cotillard for Rachel; Michael Pena as Gaff; Viggo Mortenson as Roy Batty; Zach Galifianakis as JF Sebastian; Imogen Poots as Pris--that about covers it.
