German industrial designer Dieter Rams might not be a household name, but we’ve been living with his sleek, elegant creations since the 1950s. As the design director of then-fledgling electronics company Braun, he produced iconic white or gray record players, electric shavers, coffee makers and calculators that are now on display in spots like New York City’s Museum of Modern Art. Brit designer Jonathan Ive, the mastermind behind Apple, is also a fan, thanks to Rams’ less-is-more aesthetic. So, we were thrilled to hear that Rams’ brilliant 606 Universal Shelving System for Vitsoe is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Easily assembled from interchangeable parts, the 606 can be customized for small or large storage. What’s more, complete sets start at $285, so you don’t have to shell out a fortune for timeless, functional design.
