Jason Garrett: “Another Level” Of Stars Coming

Garrett believes younger guys like Dez Bryant, Sean Lee and DeMarco Murray are coming into their own

The Dallas Cowboys have seen their share of struggles in the draft of late, but according to head coach Jason Garrett, the team has a younger wave of future stars in place and developing rapidly. This week, Garrett discussed the new generation of future stars--coming up behind veteran stars like Tony Romo, Jason Witten and DeMarcus Ware--all of whom have come from the team’s past two draft classes. (What this says about the few classes before those, we’ll let you decide.)

“When you think about some of the younger guys we’ve added to our program in the last couple of years we do believe there’s another level coming,” Garrett said, per ESPN Dallas. “You think about Sean Lee, you think about Dez Bryant, you add Tyron Smith, DeMarco Murray and some of these guys that we drafted, they can be the cornerstones of our team as we go forward.

“To add those to the more veteran guys that we mentioned who are really some of the elite players in the league, we feel like there is a foundation that’s been developed throughout our team.

“But you have to get better throughout your team. You always have to create competition to make the bottom of your roster better at every position. You create competition. Whether it’s creating competition to make those individual guys better or just to allow the new guy to come in and step into his place hopefully in the end that’s going to make your overall team better.”

Of those Garrett mentioned, Lee led the team in tackles and tied for the lead in interceptions; Bryant finished with 63 catches, 928 yards and nine touchdowns; Smith struggled some, but looked pretty promising, especially considering he’s the youngest player in the league; and of course, Murray broke out for 897 yards on 164 carries and two touchdowns before a fractured ankle cut his rookie season short.
