After the Cowboys victory over the Rams on Sunday, owner and general manager Jerry Jones suggested that, if it were up to him, guard Montrae Holland would get a game ball. We’re not sure if this idea came to fruition, but the veteran is getting something just as good--a starting job at left guard.
“For now he’s the starting left guard going forward, absolutely,” head coach Jason Garrett said, per ESPN Dallas, “and again one of the concerns was what his conditioning was going to be like not having played and I think he showed he can do that. He can be football ready.”
This might have something to do with the fact that Holland, who was cut by the Cowboys following training camp, shed ten pounds in the month and change that he spent as a free agent. With Bill Nagy on the shelf for the rest of the season, it looks as though Holland will spend the rest of the season, barring the unforeseen, as a mainstay on the Cowboys line.
“As you know he was kind of penciled in be the starter but he pulled a hamstring and missed a lot of time and when you miss time in training camp, particularly when you don’t have an offseason, you can get behind,” Garrett said. “Particularly if you’re a big guy and conditioning is so important. It’s good to see. He got away from it a little bit, got himself in really good condition and has come back and he really added a lot to our team.”
