The Dallas Cowboys’ hiring of Bill Callahan as the new offensive line coach this week gets the stamp of approval from at least one Ring of Honor member.
Former Cowboys’ quarterback and current Fox analyst Troy Aikman recently said that he likes the hire of Callahan, who will replace longtime offensive line coach Hudson Houck in 2012, due in great part to Callahan’s body of work, particularly what he did with Jon Gruden in Oakland.
“I don’t know what his techniques are, how similar or how different they are from what the Cowboys were being taught before, but knowing he was there with Jon Gruden and knowing what Jon Gruden likes to do, I think that’s a pretty good fit, would be my guess, in Dallas,” Aikman said, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Under the tandem of the head coach Gruden and the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Callahan, the Raiders led the NFL in rushing back in 2000. Callahan then took over as head coach in 2003, and led the team to the Super Bowl, where his team was beaten soundly by the Tampa Bay Bucs--coached, of course, by his old pal Gruden.
“Talking to a number of players and coaches who were part of that staff long ago, before he went on became the head coach in Oakland, from early on in Gruden’s tenure in Oakland, a lot of people I was talking to at that time were raving about Bill Callahan and how good he was as an offensive line coach,” Aikman said.
