It doesn't matter what Jason Garrett thinks about Greg Hardy being a Dallas Cowboy in 2016.
In his NFL Combine media session the Cowboys head coach was asked about the controversial defensive end’s status with the club and Garrett quickly replied, “Greg Hardy is a free agent.”
I’ve seen Garrett try to use his podium to push his agenda and lose. He tried to pump up his desire to keep DeMarco Murray after he won the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year Award after the 2014 season only to see the bell cow running back sign a free agent contract with NFC East division foe Philadelphia.
There was that time he didn’t want to give up the play calling duties to Bill Callahan and kept telling the media no decision had been made even though his boss, Jerry Jones, told us Callahan would be take over those duties to allow Garrett to be more of a walk around head coach.
Jerry Jones doesn’t care what Garrett thinks.
Jerry likes having Garrett as his head coach but we consistently see mixed messages from both men. Garrett gives us the “right kind of guys” and “it’s a privilege to play for Dallas Cowboys” clichés and then Jones brings in a Hardy after his embarrassing domestic violence incident in Charlotte. Jones drafted Randy Gregory who failed a drug test at the 2015 Combine and went one to fail three more after Dallas drafted him. Gregory has been suspended the first four games this season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
So, Garrett can try to send a message via the NFL media he doesn’t want Hardy back on his roster but it doesn’t matter what he wants. Jones will let us know what the deal is there.

I don’t have any sympathy for Garrett because after the 2007 season he turned down offers to coach Baltimore and Atlanta, two organizations known for owners who don’t constantly meddle, but he decided to stay with the Cowboys.
With only one playoff appearance in five seasons as head coach, Garrett may need Hardy (second on the club with six sacks in 2015) to help keep his job. Garrett is the longest tenured head coach Jones has ever employed. Another losing season could mean Garrett is not coaching the Dallas Cowboys in 2017.
