Ware: “We Have To Figure Out How To Finish Games”

Cowboys’ linebacker won’t offer any excuses in response to the epic collapses we’ve seen out of Dallas in their first and last games this season. The Cowboys’ two wins on the year, of course, are sandwiched between a week one loss to the Jets in New York, and a week four loss to the Lions here in Dallas.

In both of those games, Dallas surrendered significant leads late. So how do you come back from losses like these?

According to Ware, it’s just a matter of the team learning how to finish.

"You can't always blame it all on the offense, and you can't always blame it on the defense. I always go back to that first game. If you can't finish for a whole four quarters, what are you going to do,” Ware said, per the Dallas Morning News. “We played three quarters with what, 27-3. And the fourth quarter, you just go kaput. That's what I blame it on. We have to figure out how to finish games."

To be fair, Dallas has dealt with a slew of key injuries through the first month of the season, but Ware won’t use this as an excuse. Rather, he says, all teams in the NFL have to deal with the injury bug sooner or later. And what’s more, at least from a defensive standpoint, the team is helped by the ultra-adaptable system of Rob Ryan.

"The teams that have been winning, you can't use [injuries] as an excuse,” he said. “When you look at the Patriots, they play with guys interchangeable all the time. That's what this defense is about, that's what it brings to the table. It's not just a basic, guys out there every single time. There's certain packages that mix guys in so they get used to playing.

"So that's how we've been able to get to where we are right now. When [Gerald] Sensabaugh goes down, or another person goes down, they expect 'OK, well, he's down, we're just going to bring this package up because Sensabaugh's not on this package.' That's what helps us out a lot."
