Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips looks on during the game against the Minnesota Vikings at Mall of America Field on October 17, 2010 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Vikings defeated the Cowboys 24-21.
When Wade Phillips was named the Houston Texans’ defensive coordinator on Wednesday, there was some thought that Phillips would try to wrangle some of his old staff away from Dallas. Less than a day later, that wrangling began.
Herring came onto the Dallas staff in 2008 when, of course, Phillips was at the helm. Houston fired both of their linebackers coaches, Johnny Holland and Robert Saleh, this week in an upheaval of the coaching staff that, somewhat remarkably, did not affect head coach Gary Kubiak.
Phillips is charged with a tall task in his new gig in Houston. The Texans ranked 30th in the league in total defense in 2010, and 29th in points allowed, with 427. Then again, it’s worth noting that Dallas came in 31st in the league in points allowed, with 436.
