The Dallas Cowboys are down to two tight ends, Jason Witten and James Hanna, after John Phillips opted to sign with the San Diego Chargers on Tuesday.
A member of that historically poor draft class of 2009, Phillips spent his first three seasons in the league as the Cowboys’ No. 3 tight end, behind Jason Witten and Martellus Bennett. He missed the entire 2010 season with a torn ACL, suffered in the team’s final preseason game.
In 2012, with Bennett gone, Phillips had a shot at stepping into the No. 2 tight end spot behind Witten but he failed to impress, catching eight passes for 55 yards and a touchdown. He lost a good deal of playing time to the rookie Hanna late in the season.
Phillips’ new deal will have him in San Diego through the 2015 season.
