Being Jerry Jones’s son, it’s no surprise that Stephen Jones has been known to be a glass-half-full kind of fellow. But this week, he outdid himself when he discussed how the Dallas Cowboys’ salary cap issues could be read as a positive--in that it obliges the team to have a great draft.
Earlier in the offseason, Jones argued that building through free agency is overrated and potentially detrimental, a stance that may or may not have been motivated by the fact that the Cowboys are seemingly always up against the cap going into free agency.
“Free agency isn’t always the answer,” Jones said, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “We could go out and hire somebody if we wanted. But I don’t see us going in that direction now. We are not in any rush. But what it may cause you to do is draft young people and play your draft picks, which may make us a better football team. A team like Seattle shows that.”
