Stars Open to Playing a Game at AT&T Stadium

The home of the Cowboys has hosted football, basketball and soccer games, but never hockey

It’ll be a good while before we get a date, but the Dallas Stars are open to hosting an outdoor game at the Cowboys’ home, AT&T Stadium, in the relatively near future.

Helped along by HBO Sports’ coverage of the Winter Classic each year, the outdoor hockey game is becoming about as hot a ticket as you'll find in the league, playoffs notwithstanding. The NHL had six such games scheduled for this season alone, including the Winter Classic--held this year at the Big House in Ann Arbor, Michigan--and a game at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles.

There were some issues with ice quality in LA--the NHL’s first ever outdoor game in warm weather--but the results clearly weren’t so bad as to scare future teams, like the Stars, away from the idea of playing outdoors in the future.

“We are in the very early stages of talks and planning, and we expect to make some headway during the Olympic break, but it’s still a few years away,” said Stars president and CEO Jim Lites, per the Dallas Morning News. “Just guessing, I would say 2015-16 at the earliest, and more realistically 2016-17.”
