Sen. Majority Leader Calls on Redskins to Change Name

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid wants the Washington Redskins to take a cue from the NBA--specifically, Commissioner Adam Silver’s decision this week to ban Clippers’ owner Donald Sterling for life for making a series of racist comments--and change their nickname sooner rather than later.

From the senate floor on Wednesday, not too far from Redskins Park in Ashburn, VA, Reid blasted ‘Skins’ owner Dan Snyder, saying he “fails to show any leadership,” and called on the NFL to be more decisive on the long-controversial matter.

(Warning: If you hate basketball puns, you probably shouldn’t read the following quote.)

The National Football League should take an assist from the NBA and pick up the slack," Reid said, per NBC News. "It would be a slam dunk .. For far too long the NFL has been sitting on its hands doing nothing while an entire population of Americans has been denigrated.”

In the past, Reid has predicted that the Redskins will change their name at some point and, judging by his latest remarks, he thinks the time is now.

“How long will the NFL continue to do nothing--zero--as one of its teams bears a name that inflicts so much pain on Native Americans?” Reid asked.
