Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was never too worried about the team’s supposed interest in Johnny Manziel, executive vice president Stephen Jones told Mad Dog Sports Radio’s Adam Schein this week.

Jones said the team spoke with Romo about the Manziel-to-Dallas rumors prior to the draft.

“Of course, his response, as you might expect from Tony,” Jones said, per the Dallas Morning News, “was, ‘Well, if you decide to, it ain’t going to matter, there’s no one out there who can beat me out.’”

Of course, the Cowboys opted to pass on Manziel, going with the more Romo-friendly selection of offensive tackle Zack Martin with their 16th overall pick. Strengthening the line is of paramount importance for Dallas for obvious reasons, with Romo coming off a season that began and ended with a back operation.

“He’s as excited as he has ever been,” Jones said of Romo. “He really likes what Scott Linehan has in mind for our offense. He feels like with the moves we made during the draft and solidifying our offensive line and some of the weapons we have, he’s never been more excited about our football team in terms of what we can get accomplished.”
