The health of Tony Romo has, unsurprisingly, been a hot topic since the Cowboys signal caller underwent back surgery for the second time in an eight month span back in December. But Romo is optimistic about his future, and even that might be an understatement.
In an interview with 105.3-FM The Fan’s Ben and Skin on Wednesday, Romo predicted not only that he would he be able to play through this upcoming season, but that he has another half decade of quality football left in him.
“There’s no question in my mind, not only am I going to be able to make it through 16 games, I’ll make it through another five years,” Romo said, per the Dallas Morning News. “Some people have issues just based on their body alignment and degenerative things, but none of those are my issues. Mine is just something small and I just got hit at the wrong time and that’s part of what happened. If you play football long enough, you’re going to have something.”
For obvious reasons, the Cowboys have been taking baby steps with Romo, but both he and the team have been encouraged by what they’ve seen thus far.
“Backs eventually just continue to get better and better and better and all of a sudden you’re 100 percent,” he said. “We’re coming up on that pretty soon. Within the next month, there’s no question we’ll be 100 percent. Hopefully it’s in the next week or two, which is a viable and serious time that it could happen in. It could be another two or three weeks. We’ll see. We’ll be smart at OTAs, but at the same time, we got to get to work.”
