Report: Mike Zimmer Lands Minnesota Job

Mike Zimmer was with the Cowboys from 1994-2006 as defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator

Longtime Cowboys assistant Mike Zimmer will be hired as the next head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter reported Wednesday.

The Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator since 2008, Zimmer interviewed with the Vikings for a second time on Tuesday and reportedly spent the night in the Minneapolis area. He replaces another defensive-minded head coach, Leslie Frazier, who was fired after the season.

Zimmer has been in the league since 1994--when he was brought to Dallas as defensive backs coach--but this is his first opportunity as a head coach. He served as the Cowboys defensive coordinator from 2000 through 2006, but departed for the Falcons in 2007, when Wade Phillips was brought in.

After that one season in Atlanta, Zimmer went to Cincy, where he’s been until, well, this morning.
