We’ve become accustomed to Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones and his son Stephen positively gushing about former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel. But until today, we’ve brushed it off. After all, it was just a year ago that the Cowboys gave Tony Romo an unprecedented extension worth $108 million ($55 million guaranteed).
Then there’s the fact that Dallas has much more pressing needs than quarterback. And finally, from all we’ve heard, there’s a pretty great chance that Manziel will be off the board long before Dallas picks at No. 16 overall.
But today we learned that Dallas might have real interest in Manziel if he does, in fact, slip to them. This comes from ESPN’s Ed Werder (Terrell Owens’ old friend), who said on SportsCenter that, yes, there might be more to the Jones’ praise of Manziel than just public bluster.
Via Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com, Werder said, “Jerry Jones was raving about [Manziel] this weekend ... in front of Romo.”
For the record, we’re still filing this idea under “probably not gonna happen.”
But boy, would that be interesting.
