Report: Cowboys Have Been in Contact with Chris Johnson's Agent

The former 2,000-yard rusher spent last season with the New York Jets

Even though the release of running back Ryan Williams was followed pretty much immediately by the signing of Gus Johnson, an undrafted running back out of Stephen F. Austin, the mere mention of shuffling at the running back position has some wondering if the Cowboys won’t look to sign a league veteran at some point.

This wondering has gone on throughout the offseason. For a good long while, the rumors involved Adrian Peterson. Now they involve Chris Johnson, the former 2,000-yard rusher who publicly invited the Cowboys to give him a call this offseason and still doesn’t have a team.

Cowboys executive vice president and C.O.O. Stephen Jones responded at the time by saying the team was happy with their current stable of running backs but that the man they used to call CJ2K is on the team’s short list should that change.

That hasn’t changed to this point, that we know of anyway, but NFL Media’s Rand Getlin reported Monday that the Cowboys have been in contact with Johnson’s agent--and they’re the only team who have been in contact with the former rushing champ's agent.

There’s a good chance that this means nothing, of course. But it’s worth keeping in mind as the Cowboys head to Southern California for camp.
