To be sure, if the NFL lockout results in the cancellation of games, there will be repercussions for the league. Now, we have some idea of how far-reaching those repercussions may be.
According to a poll conducted by Adweek and Harris and published today in the USA Today, 19 percent of fans would be less likely to return to the league if the current labor impasse results in missed games. Harris’ team of analysts came away with the following message for the NFL:
"Although professional football has reigned as America's favorite sport for many years, between the current labor lockout and increased understanding of the damaging effects of head injuries, the sport may have a rough road ahead. Professional football is a business, as the fierce labor lockout makes abundantly clear, yet if these financial discussions turn off the fans, NFL executives may need to reevaluate their priorities."
Currently, the country is awaiting the decision of the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals. The court previously granted the owners a stay after Judge Susan Richard Nelson ruled that the NFL’s lockout was invalid. A decision is expected in the coming weeks.
