NFC East Watch: Giants Looking at Backup QBs

Eli Manning underwent ankle surgery last week

With Eli Manning down for around six weeks following ankle surgery last week, the New York Giants are looking to the free agent market to find some security at the quarterback position. According to Kim Jones of NFL Network, Matt Flynn and Josh Freeman will arrive in East Rutherford today and work out for the team on Tuesday.

Aside from Manning, the Giants have QBs Curtis Painter and Ryan Nassib on the roster. Both came to New York last year, the ex-Colt Painter in free agency and the Syracuse product Nassib via the draft (fourth round).

Freeman, the 17th overall pick out of Kansas State in 2009, spent four seasons and change with the Buccaneers--and for awhile looked like a potential star in the NFL--but was released last October. He spent the rest of the season as the third string quarterback in Minnesota.

Like Freeman, Flynn was once viewed as a rising star. He spent 2008-2011 backing up Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay before signing with the Seahawks in 2012. In 2013, he spent time with the Raiders and the Bills, before returning to the Packers in the wake of an injury to Aaron Rodgers.
