Mississippi State's Mullen on Prescott at SEC Media Day: “He's A Winner”

Prescott was selected by the Cowboys in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft

How influential is Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott? Well, enough to be a topic at SEC Media Day.

It was Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen’s turn on the mic today down in Hoover, Alabama and Prescott became the subject of conversation.

Mullen has a history of developing and evaluating quarterbacks during his college career with Tim Tebow, Alex Smith and Prescott to name a few. Mullen spoke about the traits he looks for in players; what he can and cannot coach, such as leadership and physical toughness. Prescott fit the bill.

“One of the things said when NFL teams called us about Dak Prescott is that he won,” said Mullen. “He took Mississippi State to be the number one team in the country and people are surprised he took the Dallas Cowboys to the playoffs. He’s a winner.”

Going into this season, Nick Fitzgerald will be the signal-caller for the Bulldogs, taking over the spot that Prescott once held. So are the secrets for success passed down to the successor at Mississippi State?

“They talk,” added Mullen. “He remains there as support for Nick and he remains there for everybody in the program.”

Prescott was a fourth-round selection of the Cowboys in last year’s draft. The strategy was to find some depth and the incumbent at the quarterback position for the often-injured Tony Romo. It was supposed to be a process but things were sped up after Romo’s injury during the 2016 preseason. Prescott got the spot and never gave it up.

Mullen stated it’s hard to say teams missed on him since nobody knew what their strategy was going into the draft.

“I think when you get to the NFL, everybody is looking for something different and you might not be looking for a quarterback, or someone of his style,” said Mullen.” It's hard to say teams missed on him because you don't know what their strategy going into that draft was."

Mullen also shared what he described as a great moment showing the belief Prescott has in the Mississippi State athletic program

“You see a lot of former players; maybe they are up in the box, sitting in the VIP protected lounge. Here’s the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, in Dallas at the women’s Final Four and he’s jumping up and down with a towel in the middle of the fans section going crazy. That shows his passion for the university.”
