Marinelli: Expect More Man Coverage in 2014

Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli intends on using more man coverage in 2014

Hoping to play to the strengths of his three top corners, Brandon Carr, Orlando Scandrick and Morris Claiborne, Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli will look to use man-to-man coverage more often in 2014.

"These guys are really good man corners," Marinelli said, per ESPN Dallas. "They can go up and get you and press you. They really add something to the defensive package."

In 2013, their first year in Monte Kiffin’s 4-3 system, the secondary--like the rest of the defense, really--struggled mightily. So if Marinelli, who took over as coordinator this offseason, is going to give Carr, Claiborne and Scandrick the responsibility of lining up in man-coverage, they’ll have to inspire some confidence in their coaches this offseason.

This isn’t lost on Claiborne, who struggled as much as anyone last year, and actually lost his starting job to Scandrick down the stretch.

"We have to go out during practice and stuff like that and show those guys we're able to come back to the line constantly and line up man-to-man constantly, each and every play,” Claiborne said, “to give those guys some comfort in us.”
