Kellen Moore Expected to Step Into No. 2 QB Role

Moore will back up Matt Cassel against the Redskins on Monday night

The Dallas Cowboys have yet to make the roster moves to make it official, but it’s expected that quarterback Kellen Moore will move up to the No. 2 quarterback spot and serve as Matt Cassel’s backup on Monday night in Landover, Maryland as the Cowboys take on the Redskins in the first game since Tony Romo’s season-ending injury.

We would anticipate Kellen moving up into that No. 2 role,” head coach Jason Garrett said Monday.

Moore has the benefit of having spent two seasons under offensive coordinator Scott Linehan in Detroit, and though there’s a lot different between that system in Detroit and this one in Dallas, Garrett believes Moore is plenty comfortable with the offense at this point, after three months with the team.

“I think that’s one of his real assets, is that he’s a really smart football player,” Garrett said. “Obviously he’s been around Scott Linehan in Detroit, so he has a comfort level with him and with our system. The terminology and some of the nuances and details of our system is different than what he ran in Detroit, but I do think he has comfort level with the concepts and how we try to do things.”
