It’s June 1. And Brandon Carr is still a Dallas Cowboy.
Raise your hand if you lost that bet. Yeah, me too.
Given his sub-par play, enormous contract and the commitment to Orlando Scandrick, return of Morris Claiborne and drafting of Byron Jones, banking on Carr still being a Cowboy into the summer seemed iffy at best.
But the Cowboys didn’t designate him as a June 1 cut, and appear ready to move forward with him and his $12.7 million salary.
With another restructuring of Tony Romo’s contract the team was able to fit its off-season moves under the salary cap. So the cutting of Carr and his financial fat wasn’t necessary after all.
But for a cornerback making that kind of money to be a non-impact player at a crucial position, just seems difficult to envision Carr and the Cowboys status quo. They could still cut him and save $8 million under this year’s cap, but since it would be after June 1 the move would require the Cowboys to carry $7.5 million on the books next year in “dead money.” Ouch.
Barring something wacky, Carr will head into training camp with a star on his helmet and a healthy bank account.
