Josh Thomas' Wild Draft Weekend Ends With Homecoming

Buffalo cornerback Josh Thomas grew up in Dallas, watching the Cowboys play football on TV. Considering, his being drafted by the Cowboys, which he was in the fifth round on Saturday, would make for an emotional moment for Thomas--and apparently, we’re not alone in thinking that.

Thomas received a number of prank phone calls by like-minded jokesters during the draft; so many in fact that, by the time Cowboys’ owner and general manager Jerry Jones got in touch with Thomas on Saturday, to tell him that the team had selected him with their fifth round pick, the rookie thought it was a prank and an unoriginal one at that.

I’d been getting prank calls,” Thomas said, per ESPN Dallas. “I got a 972 number on there and I didn’t know what to expect. I got the phone call from the Cowboys and it’s kind of surreal.”

Understandably, given the circumstances between the prank calls and Thomas’ roots in Dallas, when the big, non-prank call finally came, Thomas had a hard time believing that Jerry Jones was on the other end. Which, according to Thomas’ account, led to a funny exchange between the rookie and the owner.

“He said, ‘Are you there?’” Thomas said. “And I asked, ‘Are you there?’ because I was in disbelief that I was talking to Jerry Jones.”
