Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has mentioned that the team might put the franchise tag on receiver Dez Bryant come this offseason, when his rookie contract expires.
Asked this week about contract Bryant’s situation, as well as that of running back and fellow free agent-to-be DeMarco Murray, Jones made clear that the franchise tag remains a card that he may play this spring.
“It takes two to tango,” Jones said, per the Dallas Morning News. “Of course there’s negotiations involved and contracts. We do have and the system has--it’s a very important ingredient to the system called franchise players or transitional players. That allows you to have first dibs, it’s transitional but it allows you to have the player.
“It’s very costly, it’s very good for the player but we wanted to let a few cards play out relative to our team, not necessarily Dez, but to other parts of our team before we made a commitment with the kind of contract it’s going to take to get Dez Bryant signed for a long period of time.”
