A year after a fan started a petition on the White House’s website asking that control of the Dallas Cowboys be wrested from Jerry Jones, the longtime owner and general manager has been named the Executive of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America.
Among the moves Jones oversaw prior to the season, Zack Martin was drafted with the 16th overall pick in the 2014 Draft--the third time in the last four years that they’ve taken an offensive lineman in the first round. Not the sexiest pick at the time, it was the right one, as Martin was named All-Pro in his rookie season and helped the young line emerge as one of the best groups in football.
The Cowboys also brought Rolando McClain out of retirement to replace middle linebacker Sean Lee, who suffered a torn ACL on the first day of training camp, and McClain became one of the best defenders on the team.
For his trouble, Jones was rewarded with a 12-4 regular season record and the team’s first NFC East Championship since 2009.
