Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones called Doug Free’s debut at right guard against the Bengals last week amazing, and he’s sticking to that evaluation. In fact, according to Tim MacMahon of ESPN Dallas, Jones is seriously considering declaring Free the Week One starter at that spot.

“We’ve got to be a little guarded because Free was nothing short of amazing to come in and play at the level he played,” Jones said this week. “You’d have to be real careful making a pretty significant commitment relative just to the cap standpoint at this juncture, relative to looking to the future."

“Amazing that he played how he played not having played the position before, but playing at a level that we can win with,” said Jones.

With Free at right guard, Dallas would start Jermey Parnell at right tackle, Free’s old spot. If Ronald Leary can return from having his knee scoped in time for the opener, he would play on the other side of Travis Frederick at left guard, an interior alignment on which Jerry seems pretty high.

“Play 'em both,” Jones said of Free and Leary. “I would hope that Leary comes back, and should as a starter. That’s the way he left. Play 'em both.”
