It's Official: Spencer To Play Under Franchise Tag

2013 will be the second consecutive year that Spencer plays under the franchise tag

Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer--officially, now--will play under the franchise tag in 2013, the second consecutive year he’ll do so.

The deadline for a long-term contract passed on Monday at 3 P.M. Central Time, ESPN Dallas reports.

This isn’t really shocking news since Spencer’s party and the Cowboys decided to break off long-term contract talks late last month. The two sides reportedly remain on good terms, but it doesn’t seem as though they were ever really close to ironing out a new deal.

Under the franchise tag, Spencer will make $10.6 million this year.

Others playing under the franchise tag this year include Bears’ defensive tackle Henry Melton, Bengals defensive end Michael Johnson, Bills safety Jairus Byrd, Chiefs left tackle Branden Albert and Dolphins defensive tackle Randy Starks.
