Dallas’s first team offense got off to a strong start, but stalled in the red zone, in their first and only drive. After reaching the Cincinnati five, Felix Jones fumbled in the end zone, but an offsides call negated the turnover. Still, Dallas was unable to score, with Tony Romo throwing three straight incomplete passes.
David Buehler nailed his first live field goal attempt though, to give the Cowboys a 3-0 lead.
Tight end John Phillips led the team in receiving with four catches for 60 yards, and threw a block that sprung Tashard Choice on a 21-yard run, but went down in the first half with a knee injury. Return man Titus Ryan also left the game, with a fractured thumb, an injury that will seriously hinder his chances of making the team.
Buehler ended the first half a perfect two-for-two on field goals, but his perfection came to an end in the second, with a missed 49-yard attempt. After a Brandon Williams interception on the next play though, he got back on track with a 23-yard field goal.
The Bengals began the fourth quarter with two consecutive turnovers, the second of which was a pick-six by Brandon Sharpe, for the first touchdown of the game. This extended Dallas’s lead to 16-0.
Cincinnati , who was throughly stymied all night by Dallas’s defense, finally got on the board with a touchdown from Jordan Palmer to Darius Hill on the team’s last drive.
Third string quarterback Stephen McGee got the lion’s share of snaps at quarterback for Dallas, going 12 for 22 for 116 yards. Tashard Choice was the team’s leading rusher, with 7 carries for 41 yards.
Dallas will play its next game on Thursday, against Oakland.
