Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett says linebacker Rolando McClain has a ways to go in picking up the defense, which isn’t surprising because he’s only has a handful of practices with his new team, and he’s only been a Cowboy for a little over a month total, at this point.
But Garrett has also seen flashes of the player the Oakland Raiders drafted with the No. 8 overall selection in the 2010 draft--before issues on and off the field led the Raiders to cut ties with McClain, and McClain to abruptly retire from football before the 2013 season.
“It’s easy to see why he was a Top 10 pick in the draft coming out of school,” Garrett said, via the team’s official website. “I have liked what he’s done so far. He’s smart. He picks things up very quickly in meeting and is able to translate it on the field.
“Now, it’s really early and he’s probably practice four or five days with us and he has a long way to go, but he’s really kind of stepped into this situation and it seems like he’s taking advantage of this opportunity.”
